“Katerina” Gorge in Trigoniko

The Gorge Katerina in Trigoniko is over 8 km and starts from Metaxa and ends at Rymnio. The passage is relatively easy and the route rich in extremely tall plane trees, small waterfalls, ponds, old water mills, arch bridges, steep ravines and colorful rocks, which form a unique landscape that captivates the visitors. It is a historical and recreational route, a heaven for hikers. Thick brushes, waterfalls, streams and steep rocks compose a majestic picture and a scenery of extreme beauty that soothes and calms the soul.

Servia Gorge

South of the village of Servia and right by it, flows the stream “Platanoulia” and forms a small but remarkable gorge with impressive rocky outcrops on the slopes. The vegetation is limited to small groups of evergreen shrubs: kermes oak (Quercus coccifera), prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) and also deciduous shrubs: hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia) and chasmophytes.

On the right side of the gorge hill there are the remains of Byzantine castle that are partly covered with turkish pines. A path starts at the southern edge of the village gets in the right slope of the gorge, crosses it and goes into the southern part of the gorge. From there you can go back again, via paved pathway through the castle and the forest hill, having a panoramic view of Servia and the valley of Aliakmona. The gorge’s length reaches 3km and its maximum height is over 200m. Its entrance is at the church of Agii Anargiri, an old 15th century byzantine church. The amazing geological formations, flora and fauna as well as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic rocks compose a unique savagery and majestic scenery, making Servia Gorge one of the most spectacular in Greece. Legends and traditions springing from the wild landscape of the Grand Canyon: “Those who cross it become more beautiful and more charming,” says tradition. Also, those in love should cross it to get a positive answer to their marriage proposal to their mate, as happened with the king of Epirus Michael II and Servia Queen and Nun Theodora in 1230 AD.
