Factors that contribute to climate change from place to place are :

  • Latitude and altitude
  • Distribution of land and sea

  • Winds
  • Centers of high and low pressure etc

The main climatic types are :

  • Continental or Land

  • Type of mountains and height

Regional Unity Grevena

A big part of the R.U(regional union) it is a mountainous area and is surrounded by Lygkos mountains in the west , Chasia Vourinos in the southwest (or Kozani , 1866m) to the northeast from peaks of Vourino or Pyramida(1621m) and Derniko(1607m). In southwest are the endings of Kamvounia mountains with peaks Aetorachis (1337m) and Fakiolas (1110m) etc.Fields and lakes are absent from the R.U.Of course the longest river in the country is Aliakmonas that passes through R.Uand specific to the central and northeastern part of the R.U.

Enclosed west  ,south and east from the mountains in the center of the mainland  , the R.U Grevena has a continental climate with large thermometric differences between winter and summer , it is considered the colder region of Greece. It is cold in winter and cool in summer.Rainfall  is very high in pindos (1800millimeters) and less in the rest of mountainous zone (1400millimeters) and lower regions (600-800).

- See more at:

The influence  on climate of the R.U Florina is due to the city's geographical location and altitude. The Prespa lakes play an important role in the area of Amyntaio. The climate is continental , characterized by cold winters and hot summers.Variations in a temperature indicator is significant , while snowfall , which during the winter are a common fenomenon , coupled with the extremely low temperatures gives the R.U. a rare colour.Due to the above factors and distance of the city from the sea and from generally large bodies of water , extreme weather events are frequent.
