Kastoria

Hagiographies

From the early Byzantine period to the beginning of the Turkish Domination, the city of Kastoria had a ceaseless artistic production of high quality. The intense building activity of this period led also to the parallel flourishing of the art of hagiography, as it was expressed through wall paintings and portable icons.

It is not exaggerating to say that a tour around the churches of the region is enough for having an overview of the different expressions of the whole Byzantine art.

The similarity, in terms of style, between the wall paintings of the 10th century in the church of Agios Stefanos and Taxiarches Mitropoleos, prove that the artistic workshops of the city had contact with other artistic centers, such as Cappadocia and of course, Constantinople.

The paintings of the 12th century are distinguished for the expressiveness of the faces, the dignity and the dynamism of figures. Faces, full of intensity, are an innovation in representing human figures and signal an important moment in the Byzantine art history.

The plethora of works of this period and their exceptional quality, lead to the conclusion that Kastoria was an important cultural center. Agioi Anargyroi and Agios Nikolaos Kasnitzis are churches where the visitor can see typical examples of the high standard art developed in the 12th century.

The 13th century gave samples of a conservative type of art, trying to imitate the great works of the previous period. At the end of the century, angiographers lay emphasis on representing the volume of figures, as one may see on the wall paintings of Panagia Koumbelidiki.

The artistic activity was also intense in the 14th century. In the nine churches built that time in the city, we can see the repetition of the expressional means in painting.
