Peaches from Velvento

The peaches grown in Velvento is world renowned for their quality, aroma and taste. Two coops dealing with peaches and apples operate in Velvento today, while also famous for their distinctive taste are the spoon sweets and jams produced by the Agricultural Women’s Coop in Velvento. Specifically in the area of Velvento some 8,000 stremma of peach trees are grown, a percentage that corresponds to just 0.84% of the cultivated rural land in the Prefecture of Kozani. Nevertheless, this accounts for 3.16% of the gross rural product of the Prefecture, since production reaches, and some times exceeds, 19,000,000 kg. per year. It is worth noting that both the peaches and the apples produced in Velvento are certified by AGROCERT via the “Integrated Management for the Production of Fruits”, while, parallel to this, they are considered promoted cultivations for the Prefecture by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food. The peaches produced in Velvento are one of the key export products of the Prefecture of Kozani.

Apples of Vermio

Renowned for their quality and taste are the apples of Vermio, cultivated in the fertile plains on the foothills of the homonymous mountain.
Large orchards in the Municipality of Vermio form the core tillage in its Municipal Districts, from Pyrgoi up to Mesovouno.

In the area of Vermio some 7,000 stremma are cultivated with apple trees, a percentage that corresponds to just 0.76% of the cultivated land in the Prefecture of Kozani. Nevertheless the apples of Vermio account for 4% of the gross rural product of the prefecture, since production reaches, and in many cases exceeds, 20,000,000 kg. per year. It is worth noting that both the apples produced in Vermio are certified by AGROCERT via the “Integrated Management for the Production of Apples”, while, parallel to this, they are considered promoted cultivations for the Prefecture by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food.


The Greek “croCrocus - Saffroncus” (saffron) is a valuable spice for health, which is grown in the area of Kozani. Known from the Old Testament and Homer for its therapeutic and aphrodisiac attributes, saffron is used nowadays in medicine, cosmetics, food, beverage industry (Have you tried “tsipouro” with saffron?), confectionery and pasta industries etc. “Crocus” is known as “saffron”. Do we know that our country is one of the four places in the world, where saffron is cultivated? Saffron arrived three centuries ago in Kozani’s Region, where it began to grow in the area of Krokos of the municipality of Elimeia. Besides the municipality has the name of the plant “Krokos”. Just use it to give special flavor to your meals and sweets. Apart from that, saffron combats headache and it stimulates blood circulation. Saffron is also medicine; at least it is evidenced by a number of surveys as well as it is referred to old documents.

White marble Tranovaltou

To the southwest of Kozani, on the slopes of Kamvounia and at a small distance from one another, we find the villages of the Municipality of Kamvounia, Mikrovaltos and Tranovaltos. The area is endowed with a substratum rich in marble deposits, from which the renowned white marble of Tranovaltos is produced. The systematic exploitation and continuously increasing demand has created an intense exporting activity.
